The Finnertys.

The Finnertys

James Finnerty was born in Co. Mayo about the year 1765. He probably grew up in Behybaun or Ballybeg in the parish of Ballynahaglish. He like most of his counter parts of the time was a tenant farmer. He more than likely died in the l830s or 1840s, at the latest possibly at the time of the Great Famine, as this claimed many lives and people were buried in mass graves without any marker or records taken by the local priests. He had the following known children.

1st: John, born c. 1792, 2nd: Patrick born c. 1794-1871, 3rd: Thomas born c. 1795-1880, 4th: Michael born c. 1797, 5th: Laurence born c. 1799, 6th: James born c. 1800-1896 and 7th: Mary born circa 1802. Of his seven known children we have the families and most decendants of three of them which shall follow.

Patrick 1794-1871 moved into the local town of Ballina where he worked as a labourer. He resided in Upper Piper Hill Street. He married Bridget, possible surname was Coggans. They had two known sons, A. Michael born 1833 and B. John Patrick born 1835. These two lads immigrated to Canada via America in 1859. They both settled in Victoria, British Colombia. They owned and farmed the land on which now stands the B.C. University. Michael married Mary Anne Casey, born 1844 in Co. Galway. John arrived in Victoria about 1862 via America. He married about 1867 Hannah Culinan, born Tuam, Co. Galway. John died on the 29th of December 1874, he was buried in Ross Bay Cemetery. Hannah later remarried in December 1876 Patrick J. Houlihan. They had several children together who later in respect of their half siblings changed their surname to Fenerty as John spelt it. Hannah died on the 25th of December 1883. Mary Anne died on the 20th of October 1911 and Michael on the 21st of December 1930 in Duncan, British Colombia. Michael and Mary had the following children.

1. John Joseph Finnerty, he was born on the 1^st of May 1881. He married on the 5^th of September 1913 Annie Zephrina Dutton (born 1886). Annie died on the 24^th of January 1942 and John on the 16^th of July 1949. They had the following children.

a. Marion Finnerty, she was born 1914. She married Scotty (Lawrence) Moffat. She died on the 5^th of May 1982. They had one son.

i. Paul Moffat, he was born in February 1941. He married Marilyn McNabb. They had the following children.

I. David Moffat, he was born on the 5^th of June 1975. He married Catherine.

II. Maryanne Moffat, she was on the 18^th of April 1978. She married Murray McLennan.

b. Hillary Finnerty, she was born in 1916. She married Les Dunning. They had no children. She died on the 26^th of December 2003.

c. John Joseph Finnerty, he was born in 1917. He married Evelyn Leek. John died on the 27^th of November 1944. They had the following children.

i. Sharon Finnerty, she was born in 1944. She married Lloyd Potter. She later

married Doyle Bower.

She had the following children.

I. Randy Potter, he was born in 1961. He died in a car accident in 1985. He had one daughter.

A1. Jessie Lee Potter, she was born in 1980.

II. Brent Potter, he was born in 1962. He has one daughter from a previous relationship. He is currently married to Oxana Anatolevna.

A1. Fawn Alicia Potter, she was born in 1985. She married Lee Clark.

III. Ward Clayton Potter, he was born in 1964. He married Tammy Olofson. They have the following children.

A1. Tanya Lynn Potter. She married Michael Taupert. They have the following children.

B1. Jaxson Taupert, he was born in 2003.

B2. Emmery Taupert, she was born in 2005.

A2. Brooke Lynn Potter, she was born in 1995.

IV. Heath Potter, he was born in 1973. He married. They have two children.

ii. Lloyd Finnerty (Neil). He married Marilyn Tull on the 11^th of January 1962. When they married, as Lloyd was known in the town by the name Neil, the Minister who married them said that this is the name he would marry them under. They had one son. 1. Brian (Finnerty) Neil, he was born on the 20th of May 1966. He has one daughter Rebecca Vera Finnerty Neil, she was born 8th of September 1991.orked in surface and underground mining most of his life. Coal, c1. d. Bernard Dutton Finnerty, he was born on the 21^st of October 1919. He grew up at Mill Bay, near Duncan on Vancouver Island. He married Beatrice Arden Mitchell, born 1920. Beatrice was of Scott-Indian decent. Bernard died on the 12^th of December 1990, Beatrice died in 2004. They had the following children.

i. Beatrice Lorraine (Bonnie) Finnerty, she was born on the 25^th of March 1941. She married first Warren Blomgren. They had the following children.

I. Laurie Blomgren, he was born on the 10^th of June 1958 and died in 2005. He had one daughter.

A1. Bonnie Jean Blomgren, she was born on the 1^st of April 1981. She has one daughter.

B1. Bonnie Jean Blomgren.

II. Daryl Blomgren, he was born in 1959 but died shortly afterwards.

III. Kevin Blomgren, he was born on the 3^rd of October 1961. He has the following two daughters.

Then Beatrice married ken McCrae, born 1939. They had the following son.

VI. Barry McCrae, he was born on the 24^th of August 1968. He died in 1997.

ii. Bernyce Jeannette Finnerty, she was born on the 27^th of August 1942. With Roland Bourgeois she had one daughter. She married Robert Dudley, he died in 1979. They had one daughter. She later married Edward Watts, he died in 1975. They had one daughter. Bernyce died on the 6^th of November 2005. Bernyce´s children are,

A1. David. He married on the the 23^rd of August 2006 Melissa Delorey in Jamaica. They live in High Level Alberta.

IV. Nita Jean Watts, she was born on the 25^th of October 1973. She married Rod Bronsyck. With Rod she has two sons, her two daughters are from a previous relationship.

iii. Beverly Anne Finnerty, she was born in 1945. She married Donald Earl Doberer, born 1939 They had one son. She later married Frederick Ellingworth Bowering, 1931-2002.

I. Eugene William Doberer, he was born on the 12^th of February 1964.

iv. Bernard Edward John Finnerty jr., he was born in 1947. He married Evelyn Gilgan. They had the following children. Bernard died in 1976 in a canoeing accident. This was a terrible shock for the family and one they could never recover from.

I. Jason Finnerty, he was born on the 13^th of March 1971. He currently lives in

Victoria.

II. Vashti Finnerty, she was born on the 29^th of May 1973. She married Michael Mussellam. They currently live in London, England and have the following children.

A1. Maeve Mussellam, she was born in 2003. (The most famous Queen of Con naughnt, her aparent burial site is on a hill in Co. Sligo, google it.).

A2. Madigan Mussellam, she was born in 2005.

e. Brian Michael Finnerty, he was born on the 17^th of April 1921 in Duncan, Vancouver Island.

He married Georgina Lippon. Robert died on the 15^th of August 1972. They had the following children.

i. Michael Brian Finnerty, he was born in 1952. He married Charleen ?. They had the following children.

I. Michael Finnerty, he was born in 1977.

II. Leo Finnerty, he was born in 1980.

III. Jerry Finnerty, he was born in 1981. With Catherine Dodds he has the following child.

A1. Riley Finnerty, he was born in January 2003.

ii. Robert David Finnerty, he was born on the 3^rd of May 1956. He died in 1985. With Julia Stukl he had the following daughter.

A1. Nadia Stukl, she was born in December 1983. She has the following child.

B1. Gordan Stukl, he was born on the 3^rd of May 2003.

iii. Zena Finnerty, she was born in 1958. She married Bryan Mann, he died in 1988.

f. Noemi Finnerty, she was born in 1927. She married Joseph Simpson. Naomi died on the 1^st of October 1950. They had the following children.

i. John Simpson, he was born in 1949. He died in 1976.

ii. Mary Simpson, she was born in 1950.

2. William Francis Finnerty, he was born on the 27^th of June 1884. He died on the

1^st of July 1917.

3. Mary Ann Finnerty, she was born in 1886. She married on the 30^th of April 1917 George J Brassard in Oak Bay. She died on the 30^th of September 1939.

John Finnerty 1835-1874 and Mary Culinan had the following children.

1. Patrick Sarsfield Finnerty, he was born on the 31^st of May 1868. He was known as Salty to family. Although he was on good terms with his siblings he did not like his stepfather and so left home never to be heard of again on the 2^nd of January 1885. His siblings, Joe, Annie and Katie applied to the courts to have him declared dead , which was granted on the 2^nd of January 1892. As they had no way of knowing of his life and this was the only way to finally settle their father’s estate.

2. Michael Joseph John Finnerty, he was born in 1869. He was known as Joe to the family. Joe spent many years in the Yukon, there he co-owned a blacksmith shop with a man called Murphy. He was also a keen photographer. Joe never married. He died in February 1934.

3. Catherine Cecilia (Katie) Finnerty, she was born in November 1870. She married on the 13^th of September 1893, George R. Finland. George died on the 17^th of December 1945 and Katie died on the 13^th of January 1952. They had the following children.

a. Elmer Victor Finland, he was born on the 8^th of July 1894. He became a lawyer and M.L.A for Esquimalt. He married on the 12^th of July 1921 Gladys Luetta MacDonald. Gladys died on the 23^rd of November 1983 aged 87.

b. George W. Finland, he was born on the 26^th of August 1895. He died 10 days later on the 5^th of September from an infection. He was buried beside his grandfather in Ross Bay cemetery.

c. Edna Elizabeth Finland, she was born on the 10^th of October 1896.

d. Sadie Luella Finland, she was born on the 28^th of November 1898.

e. Harold Finland, he was born in 1905. He became an aviator and a geologist.

4. Anna Maria Finnerty, she was born on the 4^th of April 1873. She married on the 15^th of July 1896 Malcolm Beaton Pollock, born about 1869. They were married by Rev. John C. Forster of the Presbyterian church. The witnesses to the marriage were Peter Davison and Mamie (Mary Ellen Houlihan b. 1877) Finnerty. Immediately after their marriage they went to the Yukon. They returned to Victoria in 1899 where they lived in the Finnerty family home on Richmond road. Annie was well versed in the social skills befitting a lady of the time and was also well known for her culinary skills, she used only home grown products. She died on the 17^th of September 1937 of pneumonia shortly after the marriage of her daughter Evelyn. Mac never married again, guess he could never replace the qualities he found in his Irish lass. Mac died on the 25^th of January 1959. Malcolm and Anna had the following children.

a. Wilfred John Pollock, he was born in 1897 on Douglas Island, Alaska. He married on the 6^th of May 1922 Kathleen Mary Duggan, born 1901. Wilfred died on the 7^th of February 1979 in Comox. Kathleen died on the 28^th of February 1985 also in Comox. They had the following children.

i. Phillipa Pollock.

ii. Cyrill (Cy) Pollock.

iii. Malcolm David Pollock.

iv. Lynn Pollock.

b. Evelyn Rachel Pollock, she was born in 1910. She married Jack Elliot in 1937. They had the following children.

i. John Elliot.

ii. Joy Elliot.

iii. Malcolm David (Ted) Elliot.

c. Earl Victor Pollock, he was born in 1914. He married Phyllis Holmes, originally from Belfast. They had the following child.

i. David Neil Pollock, he was born in 1948. He married Ingelise Norgaard from Denmark.

II. Hanna Christine Pollock. She married John Law and had one son. She later married Rod MacDonald and they had one son.

5. John William Finnerty, he was born on the 12^th of January 1875. He died in May 1880. Cause of death was given as strangulation of the intestine.

3^rd Thomas Finnerty, he was born circa 1795. He married Mary Holmes (1804-1896). They settled in Ballybeg after their marriage. Thomas died in 1880. They had the following children.

A. John Finnerty, he was born 1831. He lived in Ballybeg after his marriage to Mary ?. (She was born circa 1834). They had the following children.

1. Mary Finnerty, she was born in 1870.

2. Elizabeth Finnerty, she was born in 1872.

3. Bridget Finnerty, she was born in 1878.

B. Thomas Finnerty, he was born in 1837. He also lived in Ballybeg and married Mary ? (born circa 1845). They had the following children.

1. Bridget Finnerty, she was born in 1875.

2. Michael Finnerty, he was born in 1879.

3. Thomas Finnerty, he was born in 1881.

4. Mary Finnerty, she was born in 1883.

5. Catherine (Katie) Finnerty, she was born in 1885.

6. Anthony Finnerty, he was born in 1888.

4^th Michael Finnerty, he was born circa 1797.

5^th Laurence Finnerty, he was born circa 1799.

7^th Mary Finnerty, she was born circa 1802. (To make things more convenient I’m placing Mary here)

6^th James Finnerty was born circa the year 1800. He was more than likely born in Behybaun as this was his home town according to the 1856 records. He farmed in the Behybaun, Ballynahaglish and Rehins areas. These areas at the time did not belong to Ballina as they do today. He married in the year 1825/1826 Honor Anne McGuinness. There is no record of the marriage but it more than likely took place in Ballina Church (it must be remembered that most priests charged a fee for registration, if this was not paid then the people were not entered in the books). James died on the 5^th of June 1892, the cause was probably listed as old age with debilities. Anne had already died in 1885 aged 82, although I doubt she was born in 1803 as her last child was born in 1853, I would reckon she was born no earlier than 1807. While we are here lets just consider that when people died their ages were often just guessed by the family. They are both buried in Ballynahaglish cemetery. They had the following children.

A. Patrick Finnerty: He was born in the year 1827 in Behybaun. No records exist for the birth or marriage of Patrick. He married circa the year 1855/1856 Catherine Murphy, from Cloonglasna, Ardagh. She had been born circa 1831. Patrick inherited the land in Behybaun from his father and continued to live at the family homestead. Here is Patrick’s entry from the 1901 census.

Catherine died in September 1899, no record exists for her death but this information comes from a family Bible. From the 1901 census we know that Patrick’s house was the fifth in the street where he lived. The house was built of stone the roof was either of wood or thatch and it had three rooms. There were three windows to the front of the house. He also spoke both Irish and English but could not write, this seems to go for most of the people of the time. Patrick died on Monday the 15^th of August 1914. The cause of death was given as old age and debilities. He had received no medical attention. The informant to the registrar of his death was his son John Finnerty. They had the following children.

1. John Finnerty, he was baptised on the 22^nd of March 1857. His sponsors were Laurence Finnerty and Bridget Murphy. We know from records available that he was still in the Ballina region in 1914. Some research still needs to be done on him.

2. Patrick Finnerty, he was baptised on the 8^th of March 1859. His sponsors were Patrick Kane and Eliza Moran. He immigrated to America in 1879. He settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. There he married Bridget (Bessie) Finnerty, she was from a neighbouring family back in Co. Mayo. Patrick worked as a builder in Cincinnati and later worked with his son. Some of their work can still be seen on some of the official buildings in Cincinnati. Patrick died on Tuesday the 1^st of May 1928 Bridget died on Monday the 23^rd of February 1920, they were both buried in St. Joseph’s cemetery, Covedale, Cincinnati, Ohio. The couple had the following children.

a. Catherine Agnes Finnerty, she was born 4^th of January 1890. She married James Quinn Maguire. She died on Friday the 6^th of August 1948.

b. John Patrick Finnerty, he was born on the 27^th of December 1891. He married Florence Dunlap (born November 3^rd 1892) Kentucky, on Saturday the 7^th of October 1916. (They later divorced). John died on Friday the 17^th of June 1938. The couple had the following children.

i. Brennan Finnerty, he was born on Saturday the 4^th of May 1918. He died on Tuesday the 30^th of October 1923 and is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Covedale, Cincinnati, Ohio.

ii. John Clark Finnerty, he was born on Saturday 10^th of April 1920. He married Margaret Anne Murphy (born on Wednesday the 31^st of July 1915) on Saturday the 7^th of August 1943. He died on Friday the 5^th of June 1992 and is buried in Carson City, Nevada, Margaret died on Friday the 5^th of July 1991. They had the following children.

I. Timothy Finnerty, he was born on Sunday the 25^th of June 1944.

II. Michael Finnerty, he was born on Sunday the 26^th of August 1945.

III. Terence Finnerty, he was born on Tuesday the 29^th of June 1948. He married Donna DeVan. They had the following children.

A1. Kayley Finnerty, she was born 1966.

A2. Casey Patrick Finnerty, he was born 1970.

A3. Kim Kathleen Finnerty, she was born 1972.

IV. Daniel Finnerty, he was born on the 8^th of December 1949.

iii. Alice Mary Finnerty, she was born on the 19^th of August 1922. She married Harry Bernard Aerni (born March 15^th 1920) on the 28^th of September 1948. They settled in Cincinnati, Ohio after their marriage. Harry died on the 13^th of November 1999.

They had the following children.

I. Sharon Aerni, she was born on the 30^th of August 1949. She married John McAlpine. They had the following child.

A1. John McAlpine, he was born 1975.

II. Susan Aerni, she was born on the 31^st of December 1952. She married Jack Follick (born May 21^st 1949) Hamilton, Ohio. They settled in Florida after their marriage and had the following child.

A1. Joseph Follick, he was born on the 6^th of October 1967. He married Karen Sylvester. They had the following children.

B1. Jacob Gucinski, he was born on the 26^th of March 1992.

B2. Josie Follick, she was born on the 18^th of March 1996.

III. Sally Aerni, she was born on the 29^th of April 1956. She married Tony (Anthony) Rosiello. They had the following children.

iv. ‘Baby Girl’ Finnerty, she was born in June 1924 and died shortly afterwards.

3. Catherine Finnerty, she was baptised on the 17^th of March 1863. Her sponsors were John and Catherine Finnerty. She married on the 8^th of February 1890, Martin Howley, Creggaun, son of Michael and Honor (nee Jordan) Howley. The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Howley and Honor Finnerty. The couple was married in Rathduff church by Fr. Michael McHale. According to the registration Catherine could not write. They resided at Creggaun after their marriage and had the following children. We know from the 1936/37 Electoral registrar that they were both dead by this time and their three children were still living together in Creggaun.

b. Michael Howley, he was baptised on the 16^th of February 1893. His sponsors were John and Honor Finnerty.

c. Martin Howley, he was baptised on the 2^nd of November 1897. His sponsors were “names were illegible”.

4. James Finnerty, he was baptised on the 20^th of May 1865. His sponsors were Thomas Finnerty and Mary Monnelly.

5. Thomas Finnerty, he was baptised on the 28^th of July 1867. His sponsors were James and Honor Finnerty. He married circa 1895/1896 Elizabeth Robinson, Ballinaraha.

Above is Thomas’s entry from the 1901 census.

Thomas worked as a Milesman on the Mid and Great Western Railway. He was

also a pig and cattle dealer. They resided after their marriage at Rathrobeen but

by 1911 they were living in Ballinaraha, Rehins with Elizabeth’s mother, Mary

(nee Reape) Robinson. After Mary’s death Elizabeth’s brother Patrick gave the

farm over to them and their young family. Elizabeth died on the 6^th of

February 1937 and Thomas died on the 25^th of February 1939. They had the

following children.

a. Catherine (Kitty) Finnerty, she was baptised on the 17^th of October 1897. Her sponsors were William and Honor Finnerty. Kathleen was to immigrate to America the year after Mary had left home. She sailed from Liverpool, as had Mary. She sailed on the same ship, pictured below. She arrived in Ellis Island on the 6^th of March 1923. From the original ships manifest we find that she was joining her sister, Miss Mary Finnerty now living at 339 Stirling Place, Brooklyn, NY. Kathleen description is given as 5’ 6”, of fair complexion she had brown hair and blue eyes. She married a man by the name of Gormley from Co. Cavan. They married in St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn. Catherine died of cancer sometime in the mid to late 1950s. They had the following children.

i. Mai Gormley. She became a Nun, she died in late 2004.

ii. Elizabeth Gormley. She too became a Nun.

iii. Bernard Gormley. He died of cancer. He married Josie ????. They had the following children.

I. Mary Gormley.

II. Catherine Gormley

III. James (Jimmy) Gormley. He was a detective with the NY police force.

iv. Catherine Gormley. She was a FBI agent and was involved in `The Black Dahlia case of 1947. (This case was the brutal murder of a girl called Beth Short) in Los Angeles in January 1947.

b. Mary Finnerty, she was born on the 26^th of May 1899.

She immigrated to America in 1922. She sailed from Liverpool, England on a ship called the Cedic.

Mary arrived in New York on the 2^nd of October 1922. Her fare had been paid by her father, Thomas Finnerty, Rehins, Ballina. She was joining her cousin Mrs. Josephine Feeny of 257 W/145 56., NY. The documents of Mary’s arrival are very interesting, it tells us that Mary was 5’ 6’’ tall, she had fair hair and dark eyes. Her complexion was given as ‘’Fresh’’. Mary married William (Bill) Smith , from Co. Longford, in St. Augustine’s Catholic church, Brooklyn. They later moved to London, England. Patsy (nee Ryce) Power recounted that she met Mary once when she was a young child. She was an old wizened lady in bed living in her sister’s Nora’s house, Patsy said she found her quite scary. Nora died in the late 1960s. They had only one daughter.

i. Elizabeth (Betty) Smith. She currently lives in Brisbane, Australia.

c. Belinda (Nemmy) Finnerty, she was born 6^th of March 1901. She immigrated to New York also. She married Jack Murray. They had the following children.

i. Catherine Murray, she became a Holy trinity Nun in Philadelphia.

ii. John Murray. He was a Police Officer, and was one of the Officers who saved President Ronald Reagan from the assassination attempt on his life on the 30^th of March 1981. John died of cancer.

iii. Elizabeth Murray. She married ? Morahan. They had the following children.

I. Martin Morahan.

II. Madeline Morahan, she was born on the 5^th of June 1952, New York.

iv. Martin Murray. He was killed by a gang in New York in his 20s. Nemmy, his mother, never got over the death of her son.

v. Thomas Murray.

d. Patrick Joseph Finnerty, he was born on the 4^th of May 1903. He married

Bridget (Tidge) Lacken, Carrentrila. They lived at Ballinaraha, Rehins after

their marriage. Bridget died on the 31^st of December 1985 the cause of death was

cancer. Patrick later moved to Limerick to live with his daughter Bridie. He died

there on the 2^nd of February 1994. They had the following children.

i. Bridie Finnerty, she was born in 1931. She married Patrick O’Brien. They lived in Co. Limerick after their marriage. They had the following children.

I. Elizabeth O’Brien, she was born 1955. She married Oliver Carney. They had the following children.

ii. Thomas Finnerty, he was born in 1933. He married Mary Mitchell. Thomas died on the 18^th of May 1974 in Dublin hospital while undergoing a major heart operation.

II. Thomas Finnerty, he was born on the 27^th of July 1968.

III. Maria Finnerty, she was born on the 29^th of June 1972.

iii. Catherine (Kitty) Finnerty, she was born on the 19^th of February 1935. She married Joseph Dunne, born 1^st of November 1932. They lived in Co. Kerry after their marriage. They had the following children.

I. Gerard Dunne, he was born on the 17^th of June 1964.

II. Paul Dunne, he was born on the 20^th of July 1965.

III. John Dunne.

IV. Jude Dunne, he was born on the 14^th of February 1970.

V. Niall Dunne, he was born on the 14^th of June 1972.

iv. Patrick Joseph Finnerty, he was born 1936. He married Eileen Thornton. They lived in Ballina after their marriage. Patrick died on the 21^st June 1988 and Eileen died on the 2^nd of March 2004.

I. Mary Finnerty, she was born 1965. From what I know she became a Jehovah’s Witness or joined some born again Christian sect.

II. Gerard Finnerty, he was born 1967. He married Barbara Landon, Bunree. They later divorced. They had the following children. He remarried on Friday the 4^th of May 2007.

III. Antoinette Finnerty, she was born 1968.

IV. Philip Finnerty, he was born 1972.

V. Sandra Finnerty, she was born in 1976.

v. John Valentine Finnerty, he was born on the 14^th of February 1938. His sponsors were Pat O´Hora and Betsie Foody. He married on the 17^th of March 1962 Frances Shaw, the Quay, in St. Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina, they were married by Canon Thomas McDonnell (later Bishop of Kilalla). The witnesses to the marriage were Patrick Finnerty and Margaret (Rita) Shaw. They settled at the Quay after their marriage. Dad left school at about the age of thirteen, it wasn’t by choice but his father thought it was better if he started working in Murphy’s mills where he himself was a manager. He worked there for some years it wasn’t well paid and it was back breaking work. Dad then started work for the CIE driving company in the early 1960s and work with them for the forty years retiring in the early 2000s. For a good twenty years or more he bred greyhounds and my brothers and I had to take care of them as we got older.

Mam and Dad had the following children.

I. Bridie Frances Finnerty, she was born on the 29^th of January 1963. Her sponsors were Patrick and Bridget (nee Lacken) Finnerty, her grandparents. She immigrated to Canada in 1988. She married on the 5^th of October 1994 Jeff Owen (19^th of March 1963). They married on the St. Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina. The witnesses to the marriage were Robert Finnerty and Teresa (nee Finnerty) Shalabi. They settled in Cambridge, Ontario after their marriage.

II. Teresa Mary Finnerty, she was born on the 26^th of May 1964. She went to work as an au pair in West Berlin, Germany in 1982. She married on the 31^st of May 1986 Joseph Shalabi (2^nd of December 1958), Nazareth, Israel. The witnesses to the marriage were Anthony Shalabi and Bridie Finnerty. Joe worked first as a carpenter for the USAF then became a Fire Warden, after the USFA left Germany Joe became an Emergency Ambulance assistant. They lived in Berlin, Germany after their marriage and had the following children.

A1. Jacqueline Shalabi, she was born on the 15^th of November 1987. Her sponsors were Anis and Odette Shalabi.

A2. Stephen Shalabi, he was born on the 7^th of January 1998.

III. John Patrick Finnerty, he was born on the 17^th of May 1965. He married on the 4^th of June 1988 Kathleen Strogen, Attymass. They were married in St. Joseph’s church, Attymass by Fr. Lamb. The witnesses to the marriage Neville Finnerty and Mary (nee Strogen) Harte. They settled in Attymass after their marriage and had the following children.

A1. Shane Joseph Finnerty, he was born on the 28^th of March 1990. His sponsors were Neville Finnerty and Mary (nee Strogen) Harte.

IV. Thomas Martin Finnerty, he was born on the 20^th of April 1966. He died on the 5^th of October 1968. Missed and always loved.

V. Anne Florence Finnerty, she was born on the 11^th of July 1967. She married on the 18^th of July 1992 Liam Cosgrave, born November 1966,Foxford. They married in St. Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina. The witnesses to the marriage were James Cosgrave and Patricia Finnerty. They settled in Rehins after their marriage and had the following children.

A1. Catriona Anne Cosgrave, she was born on the 18^th of July 1996. Her sponsors were James Cosgrave and Patricia Finnerty.

He married on the 28^th of June 2003 Gene Gibson (28^th of June 1973), Easkey, Co. Sligo. They were married in St. Michael’s church, Ballina by Rev. Ardis and Fr. John Loftus. The witnesses to the marriage were Darren and Shirley Gibson. They settled in Easkey after their marriage and had the following children. (With Martina Craig he had Thomas)

VIII. (Mary) Patricia Finnerty, she was born on the 16^th of March 1971. She married on the 4^th of September 1998 Craig Thomas (31^st of January 1969), Sheffield, England. They were married in St. Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina by Fr. Patrick Flynn.

The witnesses to the marriage were Simon Thomas and Anne (nee Finnerty) Cosgrave. They lived first in Chester, England before settling in Balla, Co. Mayo.

IX. Robert Anthony Finnerty, he was born on the 1^st of May 1972. He married on the 3^rd of August 2001 Mary McAndrew (21^st of January 1975) Killala, Co. Mayo. They were married in St. Patrick’s church by Fr. Sean Durkan. The witnesses to the marriage were John Finnerty and Siobhan McAndrew. They settled in Culleens, Ballina after their marriage. In 2007 they moved to their new house in Rehins.

X. Mary Josephine Finnerty, she was born on the 26^th of July 1974. Her sponsors were Seamus and Una Timoney.

XI. Martin Finnerty, he was born on the 26^th of February 1976. His sponsors were John and Kathleen Rush. He had a relationship with Christina McGuinness, they had the following child.

A1. Sophie McGuinness-Finnerty, she was born on the 6^th of August 2001.

XII. Paul Gerard Finnerty, he was born on the 2^nd of December 1978. His sponsors were Bridie and John Finnerty (his brother and sister).

vi. Philomena Finnerty, she was born on the 1^st of November 1941. She married Christopher Keleghan, Cong, Co. Mayo. They settled in Athlone, Co. Westmeath, after their marriage and had the following children.

vii. Mary Josephine Finnerty. She married Calum Murray, Glasgow, Scotland. They later settled in Colchester, England. They had the following children.

e. Michael Finnerty, he was born on the 11^th of September 1905. As a youth Michael joined the Old IRA and was arrested and sent to Mountjoy jail, Dublin. He immigrated to America sometime in the 1920s. He probably stayed with his sisters in New York. He married on the 1^st of May 1927 Mary Underwood, formerly of Drumord West, Co. Sligo. They were living in New York when the Wall Street Crash happened and they lived during the first years of the great depression, this was probably one of the contributing facts that made them return to Ireland in 1932 they then set up home in Beltra. In 1945 Michael and his family went to live in London, England where they settled in Hammersmith. Mary died on the 6^th of November 1972. Michael returned once to Ireland in the early 1980s with his daughters Kathleen and Mary and her daughter, by this time he had lost his memory, which was very upsetting for his brother Patrick. Michael died in March 1986. Michael and Mary had the following children.

i. Thomas Finnerty, he was born on the 23^rd of December 1927 in Brooklyn New York. He contacted polio as a child and returned with his family to Ireland in 1932. After finishing school he went to work in London, while there he married Bridget Flynn, formerly of Gurteen, Co. Sligo. They later moved to New York. Thomas worked as a secretary for the UN and at one stage for Pathe News. He died on the 21^st of June 2006. They had the following child.

I. Mary Ellen Finnerty

ii. Mary Agnes Finnerty, she was born on the 15^th of May 1929, Brooklyn, New York. When Mary was three the family returned to Ireland and set up home in Beltra. She went to live in London with her family in 1945/46. She married on the 11^th of August 1948 Patrick John Ryce, formerly of Glenisland Island, Co. Mayo, in Bayswater, London. Patrick died in October 2001. They had the following children.

I. Virginia Ryce, she was born on the 2^nd of March 1950, Hammersmith, London.

II. Finnuala Ryce, she was born on the 18^th of March 1951, Hammersmith, London. She immigrated to Canada and is currently living in Calgary.

III. Dermot Ryce, he was born on the 2^nd of January 1953, Hammersmith, London. He married in 1973 Jennifer Locke. They currently live in Wembley, London. They had the following children.

A1. Kelly Ryce.

A2. David Ryce.

IV. Neil Ryce, he was born on the 26^th of January 1957, Hammersmith, London. He married Rosalie Archibald. They have the following children.

A1. Aidan Ryce, he was born in 1996.

A3. Simon Ryce, he was born in 2004.

IV. Bernadette Ryce, she was born on the 5^th of November 1961, Hammersmith, London. She immigrated to Toronto, Canada.

VI. Patricia Marion Ryce, she was born on the 11^th of February 1963, Hammersmith, London. She had a relationship with Trevor Power, born 1963, Brooklyn, New York. They later separated. Patricia currently lives in Co. Galway, Ireland. I got to say here that without Patsy’s help I could never have completed this work on my Finnerty relatives in the States. They had the following children.

A1. Brigid Power, she was born in 1986.

A2. Patrick Power, he was born in 1988.

iii. Joseph Finnerty, he was born in 1930, Brooklyn, New York. He later lived in London. He died on the 29^th of November 2005.

iv. Lawrence Finnerty. He was born in 1932 in New York. The family returned to Ireland not long after his birth and settled in Beltra. In the 1940s they went to London, England. Lawrence died there in 1987. He married and had two children.

I. Sylvia Finnerty, she was born in 1951.

II. Michael Finnerty, he was born in 1957. He married a West Indian woman, I don´t have her name or which Island she came from. They had four children.

v. Peter Finnerty, he was born in 1935 in Co. Sligo. He married Mary ?. They had

vi. Kathleen Finnerty, she was born in 1937 Co. Sligo. Kathleen arranged for her

father to visit his brother Patrick in Rehins in 1982. She traveled with her

sister Mary (nee Finnerty) Ryce and her niece Patsy Ryce. Kathleen died in

February 1987. She had one son.

I. Paul, he was born in 1962 and sadly died in 2001.

vii. Anne Finnerty, she was born in 1946, possible London as around this time the family moved to London. She married Graham Jones, they live in Surrey. She has one son from her previous marriage

I. Mark Fowler, he was born in 1971.

viii. John Finnerty, he was born in London in 1950. He lives in Surrey and has three

children.

I. Andrew Finnerty, he was born in 1980. He is in a band called Crash

Convention. It’s becoming one of London’s must see bands and receiving

great reviews. In the picture Andrew is on the right and plays Bass Guitar.

IIa. Rachel Finnerty, she was born in 1988.

IIb. Sarah Finnerty, she was born in 1988.

f. Norah Finnerty, she was born 1906. Norah also immigrated to America. She married in St. Augustine’s Catholic church, Brooklyn, Thomas Keating. They later moved to Bayswater, London, England. Norah died in 1986, sometime after her brother Michael. They had the following children.

i. John Keating, he owned pubs in London with his brother Jimmy.

ii. Thomas Keating.

iii. Margaret Keating. She lives in Wellingbourgh, Northants.

iv. Noreen Keating. She also lives in Wellingbourgh, Northants.

v. John Keating. He was born during an air raid in London. He had special needs.

vi. Elizabeth (betty) Keating. She lives in Nottingham. She married ? Thomas.

vii. Monica. She married ???? Keary. Monica lives in Co. Galway. They had the

following children.

I. Alan Keary.

II. Stephen Keary.

III. Nigel Keary.

IV. Belinda Keary. She married Ruairi O´Aodh. They live in Galway and currently

have one child.

iii. Joseph Moran. Twin of Noreen. He lives in Swindon, England.

iv. Noreen Moran. She was the twin sister of Joseph.

v. Lawrence Moran. He still lives in Railway Cottages, Ballina.

vi. Marie Moran, she was born in 1935. She married Francis Loftus, born in 1932. They lived in Lord Edward Street, Ballina. Marie died on the 4^th of August 2004 and Frank died on the 20^th of October 2004. They had the following children.

II. Elizabeth (Betty) Loftus.

III. Joseph Loftus.

IV. Francis Loftus.

V. Michael Loftus, he was born in 1972. He died from injuries sustained in a car accident on the 29^th of June 1999.

6. William Finnerty, he was baptised on the 10^th of February 1870. His sponsors were William Murphy and Catherine McHale. He married Mary ? in 1910. He is listed as living, with his father Patrick Finnerty, in the 1901 and 1911 census. (In the 1936/1937 electoral registrar William, his wife Mary and their daughter Kathleen are listed as living in Behybaun. From this I take it that they only had the one child. William died on the 27^th of June 1941 and Mary on the 21^st of November 1954, aged 80. They were buried in Leigue Cemetery where they are buried with their daughter Kathleen, died 30^th of March 1968 and her husband Jack Ruttledge, he died on the 12^th of September 1978.

The Finnerty land at Behybaun then passed to the Ruttledge branch of the family. They had the following child.

a. Kathleen Finnerty. She married Jack Ruttledge. Kathleen died on the 30^th of March 1968 and Jack on the 12^th of September 1978. They had no children.

7. Laurence Finnerty, he was baptised on the 17^th of March 1872. His sponsors were William and Maria Finnerty.

8. Michael Finnerty, he was baptised on the 30^th of August 1874. His sponsors were James Finnerty and Catherine Murphy.

9. Honoria (Nora) Finnerty, she was baptised on the 27^th of December 1876. Her sponsors were Patrick Finnerty and Catherine McHale. She married on the 25^th of May 1909 Dominick Timlin, Bally Beg, son of Michael Timlin. They lived in Ballinaraha after their marriage and had the following children.

a. Ellen Timlin, she was born 1910.

B. Laurence Finnerty, he was baptized on the 5^th of January 1832. His sponsors were Michael and Mary Finnerty. Laurence went to live in Garranard, Moygownagh. He married but I don’t have his wife’s name at the moment. She died before 1901. They had the following children.

1. James Finnerty, he was born about 1870.

2. Bridget Finnerty, she was born about 1874.

3. Honoria Finnerty, she was born about 1876. She was a teacher.

4. William Finnerty, he was born about 1879.

5. Patrick Finnerty, he was born about 1882.

6. Catherine (Kate) Finnerty, she was born about 1885.

7. Anne Finnerty, she was born about 1887.

8. Laurence Finnerty, he was born about 1889.

C. Bridget Finnerty, she was baptised on the 6^th of December 1835. Her sponsors were Thomas Finnerty and Mary McHale.

D. Thomas Finnerty, he was baptised on the 22^nd of December 1836. His sponsors were Michael Finnerty and Mary McHale. Thomas did not marry, he died in 1875 and was buried with his parents in Ballynahaglish Cemetery.

E. Michael Finnerty, he was baptised on the 17^th of December 1837. His sponsors were John Ormsby and Bridget Browne. He also did not marry, he died in 1865 and is buried with his parents in Ballynahaglish Cemetery.

F. James Finnerty, he was baptised on the 13^th of May 1838. His sponsors were Martin Loftus and Mary O’Hora. He died July 1893 and was buried with his parents in Ballynahaglish Cemetery.

G. Mary Finnerty, she was baptised on the 9^th of February 1840. Her sponsors were Patrick Finnerty and Bridget Browne.

H. John Finnerty, he was baptised on the 31^st of January 1841. His sponsors were Michael Finnerty and Bridget Browne. He died as a baby or as a young child as a later child was also named John.

I. Honor Finnerty, she was baptised on the 21^st of April 1845. Her sponsors were Ned and Bessy O’Hora.

J. William Finnerty, he was baptised on the 1^st of July 1848. His sponsors were William Keane and Winifred O’Hora.

K Ellen Finnerty, she was baptised on the 27^th of December 1851. Her sponsors were John and Anne Finnerty.

L. John Finnerty, he was baptised on the 10^th of February 1853. His sponsors were Patrick and Cecilia Keane.
