Maternal Records Part 1.

The Shaws

Robert Shaw he was born circa 1779 possibly in Co. Mayo but from the North Mayo Heritage Center I’ve learned that the Shaws probably came from Co. Sligo and from there originally from the North of Ireland.  He was a farmer and lived first in Bunree and later by 1856 he is listed as living in Abbey Street, Ardnaree.  He married a woman named Anne but her maiden name is lost as no record exists of their marriage.  Robert died on the 12th of June 1869.  The informant to the registrar was his wife Anne Shaw.  The cause of death was given as old age, he had been ill for nine days and had received no medical attention.  They had the following known children.

A.           Anthony Shaw, he was born circa 1815.  He married on the 24th of July 1841 Bridget Cowley, born circa 1817, Rathmeel.  The witnesses to the marriage were Michael Cowley and Anne Doogher.  After their marriage they lived at Crocketstown village (The Quay village).  From the 1856 Griffith’s Valuation Anthony’s house was the 10th in his line.  The old school house, which apparently is the site on which our present house is now built was 22nd in the line.  If this is the case then the Quay village went up past what we have always known as Hennigan’s hill.  Anthony died on the 21st of October 1888.  The cause of death was given as ‘the gravel’ (this was an old term for a disease of small stones formed in the kidneys (Sand like concretions of uric acid, calcium oxalate, and mineral salts formed in the passages of the biliary and urinary tracts.).  The informant to the registrar of his death was his son Patrick Shaw.  There is no record of Bridget (nee Cowley) Shaw’s death but she was still alive in 1888.  They had the following children.

1.             Robert Shaw, he was born after April 1842 but no record has been found yet relating to his birth.  He married on the 26th of February 1878 Bridget (nee Mulrooney) Conmy, Bunree, a widow.  The witnesses to the marriage were James Gill and Mary Gallagher.  They were married in St. Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina.  Robert worked as a labourer at the Quay Harbour he later became a clerk there and was also Harbour Master after 1888.  Here is Robert’s entry from the 1901 census.

NOTE:   I just want to add here a record I found for a William Shaw living in Rusheen in the parish of Ballysakeery in 1901.  William was born about 1819/1820.  In 1901 he was listed as a widowed farmer.  He was living with his son Robert born about 1860 and his wife Mary born about 1869.  Also in the household were their children Joseph William born 1890, Bertie Robert born 1891, Mary Josephine born 1892, James born 1894 and Lucy Mary born 1899.  Also living with them were William´s other children Margaret born about 1862 and Joseph born about 1864, neither of these were married.  I´m entering this record here because, although I can´t connect them to my Shaws yet, they have similar names as my family and were Catholic, so there is possibly a connection.
